The Nine Emperor Gods are part of a cult known locally as Jieu Hwang Yeh. They influence blessings, peace and harmony as well as life and death. The festival, during which the gods are believed to return to earth, spans the first nine days of the ninth lunar month. On the eve of the ninth moon, temples hold a ceremony to welcome the Jien Hwang Yeh. Devotees dressed in white, carrying joss-sticks and candles, await the arrival of their Excellencies. There is a carnival-like atmosphere and most devotees stay at the temple, have vegetarian meals and recite continuous prayers.
