The people of Lisbon always wanted a bridge to link the two sides of the river. In 1959, Portugal organised an international competition and United States Steel Export won the right to design and build a bridge in the city. Initially called Salazar bridge in 1968, it was renamed the 25 de Abril bridge after the revolution in 1974.
