Historians haven't yet concluded when the clock tower was built, but the majority says it was in the end of D. Manuel I's reign. With the 1755 earthquake, the tower was severely damaged, so now some Pombalinas influences can be seen. Besides telling the time, it also served as a warning signal for political situations, accidents or prisoner evasions from the nearby prison.
