The 'Fabrica de Baixo' belongs to the industrial centre of the Barcarena gunpowder factory, which operated from 1540 to 1940. This 16th century building was designed to give the gunpowder its final treatment. During the 16th century, the building was submitted to renovational works under the supervision of António Cremer, the kingdom's gunpowder factory inspector.
