Barcarena's Brook springs in the north-eastern part of Sintra's region. It has a total length of 17,7 km and flows into the sea in Caxias. It was a determinant factor in the location of the gun-powder factory (Fabrica da Pólvora). In the factory were machines, like the noria and the hydro-electric power-plant, that used its waters for energy.
