The streets within the older parts of the city retain centuries old charm and character and are a perfect setting for religious events and festivals. In late February or early March, on the first Sunday of Lent, a statue of Christ is carried through the streets and kept in a chapel overnight, where it is joined by the vigilant for all-night prayers and communion. The event begins at Sao Agostinho Church in the early part of the evening.
