WebsiteMacau's largest fort, Monte Fort—a seventeenth century structure situated on a hill right next to the Ruinas de Sao Paulo, once incorporated the neighboring church and a college and had enough storage capacity to face a two-year siege. The fort's cannons commanded an excellent range of fire, right round from the inner to the outer harbor. Stunningly, given Macau's long history, they were only fired in anger once, in 1622, to repel the Dutch. Sadly, the original cannons were sold for scrap in the 1870s. Today the fort is a public park with fine views over the city.
