This experimental narrow gauge railway was originally built in 1904 to supply the thriving gold mining district of Walhalla. By the time it was completed however, the gold rush had ended and it lay idle, eventually becoming overgrown and virtually forgotten. In 1993 local volunteers decided to reconstruct the railway, which had once been considered a masterpiece of engineering. Today, visitors can ride the train over the Thomson River, and down through the Stringers Creek Gorge to its final stop at Happy Creek. The round trip takes 45 minutes. Admission: Adults AUD7; concession AUD5; family pass (one adult and four children) AUD20.
