From humble beginnings in 1861, the Melbourne Cup is now one of the foremost thoroughbred horse-racing events in the world. Held at the Flemington Racecourse, the Cup initially attracted native Victorians and riders from nearby New South Wales alone. Today, while the majority of horses come from Australia and neighboring New Zealand, the event attracts audiences from world-over. Of all the events, the 2 mile handicap is considered second to none. Bear in mind to dress well while attending the event, as there is a 'Fashions On The Field' award for the best dressed!
