Akvavit has a prime location as patrons can sit outside right next to the famous and very colourful statue that has become the symbol for Southbank. Inside, the theme is pure Scandinavian, with enough pictures and knick-knacks to console the most homesick Swedish backpacker. The clientele, though, is usually more the business suit type. Akvavit is perhaps the only place in Melbourne serving Scandinavia's tasty cuisine. Try the famous open sandwiches or traditional meatballs, pickled herring and smoked salmon. With 24 hours notice they'll even produce an authentic Nordic feast. Wash it all down with the vodka from which Akvavit takes its name.
