Melbourne, 3065
Nearest Train: Tram 86
This once shabby shopping street is gradually giving over to galleries, design stores, funky cafes and clothing outlets. The city end houses a community of respected galleries, including Port Jackson Press (number 61) and Australian Galleries (50). Beyond Gertrude Street, discount and pawn shops rub shoulders with design stores, such as in.cube8r (321), which showcases clothes and accessories by Melbourne artists. Friends of the Earth Food Co-Op, one of Melbourne’s first organic grocers, is at number 312. Smith Street’s northern end is dominated by warehouse-like clearance centers for sporting and camping goods, including Nike (416), Adidas (377) and Kathmandu (421A). – Jo-Anne Woodward
