Although Nantucket is more refined and typically more elegant and highbrow than its New England neighbors, it still takes its clam chowder very seriously. It is still referred to as "chow-dah" here with strictly a cream based stock (perish the thought of a tomato-based chowder north of New York.) The Annual Chowder Contest features the "cream" of the crop samples from local restaurants. Warning: competition is fierce (as in, delicious). Admission: adults USD5; seniors and children USD3.
