Cottle Church
Simple and quaint
Off the main island road
Cotton Ground, Nevis
Hidden deep in the underbrush off the main road is this delightful little church, which is undergoing restoration. About a mile north of Oualie Beach, there's a sign by the road at an opening, where the church is located. You have to drive deep into the bush to find it (with a four-wheel vehicle), or you can walk it. The church, now a stone shell of its former self, was the first church on the island where both slaves and slave owners worshipped together. It was built by planter Thomas Cottle, who was once a president of Nevis. But because the practise was against the law, the church was never consecrated by the Anglicans.
