Now dilapidated and sadly in need of restoration, this massive stone building was once the first resort on Nevis. After the fall of the sugar industry in the late 1800s, Nevis became a spa resort; people sailed from Europe to stay at the Bath Hotel. It was built in 1778 with therapeutic thermal baths used for treating arthritic disorders. Folks like Samuel Coleridge stayed here and it supposedly had a golf course, perhaps the first in the Caribbean. Today the hotel is in need of help, and many have talked about its future: should it become a hotel again, a government building, or a museum? The jury is still out on its future.
