Located near Irving Plaza, the 119 Bar is secretive in a rather obvious spot near Union Square. Outside looks like a nondescript storefront, but enter and one will find an easygoing, darkly lit ‘dive’ in all the good senses of the word. The mellow atmosphere lends itself nicely, especially if you can get one of the well-worn seats. Weekends can get busy which limit the availability of playing pool and speedily knocking back affordable beer. But what’s the rush? 119 is spacious and great to hang with a few friends, though some note the odd smell it emits.
