The charming Nassauer House, which was built in the 13th century, stands directly opposite the church of St. Lorenz (Lorenzkirche). It is a prime example of the residential towers that many members of the gentry lived in up to the 13th century. Indeed, it is the city's oldest private house.Nonetheless, its decorative top half was built at a later date by Jobst Haug. In 1254, one of the Kaiser's functionaries lived here, and the Kaiser himself reputedly paid a visit. The house is decorated with various coats of arms, including that of the pope. The cellar nowadays houses the acclaimed wine restaurant, Nassauer Keller, which rates amongst Germany's oldest inns. The restaurant which is situated in the Nassauer's cellar is well-known for its good food. Some even claim that it is one of Germany's oldest inns.
