The steeple-like Beautiful Well (Schöner Brunnen) rises 19 metres above the Hauptmarkt from its octagonal basin. It is believed to have been constructed in the late 14th Century and is admired by many for its beauty. Forty-six stone figures grouped into four tiers decorate this ornate piece of architecture, with each tier and figure carrying its own meaning. The original fountain was actually replaced by a copy at the beginning of the 20th Century and again after World War Two.The lattice-ironwork which today surrounds the well was not added until 1580. If you look carefully and you will see a gold-colored ring which can be turned. Legend has it that turning it three times will make a wish come true. What makes it so mysterious is that no one can explain why there is not a seam to be found on it. Some believe it was added by a naughty apprentice while his master was not looking!
