Built in 1919 out of concrete to conserve steel during WWI, the Sapona never saw as much action as it does today. The 350-foot freighter was marooned in 1926 in just 20 feet of water. A Bahamian man purchased it to store liquor during prohibition in the United States. Later, the useless vessel would be used for target practice by the US Navy. Today, divers swarm around the exposed rusted hull to seek aquatic life; it is not uncommon to find unexploded shells on the ocean floor. Bimini Undersea and many other water tour operators conduct trips to the Sapona daily.
