Website | EmailToday, Exeter is best known for two of its former undergraduates: the writer J R R Tolkein, and Roger Bannister, who became the first person to run a mile in less than four minutes in 1954. In fact, the history of the college goes back much further, to the early 14th century. Founded by the Bishop of Exeter in 1314, the college was mostly rebuilt in the 17th century, but you can still see the medieval gatehouse, Palmer's tower.
