Website | EmailAu Rocher de Cancale is the classic French bistro, from its gleaming zinc bar to its battered wooden tables. Its old-school air shouldn’t be surprising – the restaurant opened in 1846. In those days, it was no casual bistro, but a grand restaurant where the likes of Stendhal and Balzac dined. Today, although it is more modest, it still serves top-rate French cuisine. Try the Saumon Rôti au Pistou (roasted salmon with pesto) or Pavé de Canard aux 5 Épices (duck with 5 spices). And remember to take a moment to stand before the restaurant to admire its beautiful neo-Renaissance façade. On Sundays, the restaurant is popular for its copious brunch. -Barbara Diggs
