Did You Know?
Perth is known as the "City of Lights" after the first Mercury spacecraft passed over the city in 1962. Perth's residents switched on their street, porch, house and office lights to greet American astronaut John Glenn on his flight. Perth repeated this illuminating gesture in 1998 when a much older Glenn made one last trip into space in the Discovery, lighting up the city as this more modern and contemporary spacecraft passed overhead.
Orientation:
Perth is located on the western coast of Australia near the southwestern tip of the country.
