Perth's residents switched on their street, porch, house and office lights to greet American astronaut John Glenn on his flight. Perth repeated this illuminating gesture in 1998 when a much older Glenn made one last trip into space in the Discovery, lighting up the city as this more modern and contemporary spacecraft passed overhead.
