Former colonial power, France, is back in Phnom Penh and back in a big way. Having rebuilt their huge embassy compound at the top of Monivong Boulevard, there is also an attempt to revive the belle époque of French language and culture in Cambodia. The Centre Culturel Français du Cambodge seems to cater more for home-sick expatriate Phnom Penhois than the locals, but it does offer an interesting program of French films (shown with English subtitles), exhibitions and other cultural events.
