The Grand Théâtre Preah Bat Norodom Suramarit, designed by architect Vann Molyvann was built in 1968. Shaped like a boat it is aptly located on the banks of the Mekong river. This house of the National Theater of Cambodia burnt down in February 1994 leaving behind a shadow of its past splendor. Lack of funding has not allowed for any restoration and the property continues to lie in its pitiable state. The theater almost seems like a metaphor for Cambodia and its Khmer Rouge. Hopefully the theater, like Cambodia, too rises from the ashes!
