In a region as flat as that around Phnom Penh, the hilltop temple of Phnom Chisor offers a rare view of the surrounding countryside. This active monastery, which dates back to the 11th century, was known as Suryagiri (mountain of the sun) in the Ankorian period. To get to the temple, drive 55 kilometres south of Phnom Penh on Highway 2 until you reach Prasat Neang Khmau (Temple of the Black Virgin), turn left onto the market access road and continue 5 kilometres until you reach the bottom of Phnom Chisor.
