Viðeyjarstofa was Iceland's first stone building, built in 1752-55 on the small island of Viðey, just outside Reykjavík harbour. Now housing a restaurant and conference facilities, this was originally built as a residence for High Sheriff Skúli Magnússon. The house is an excellent example of simple, clear architecture, and has been renovated twice, in 1967-79 and 1987-8. Next to Viðeyjarstofa is a tiny church, forming a consistent whole with the bigger house, which is now a popular venue for hip marriages. The menu offers international cuisine and Icelandic specialities; banquet services are obviously available as well.
