WebsiteEnjoy the same view of the James River that English settlers saw when they landed here and celebrated the first official Thanksgiving in 1619. During the Civil War, President Lincoln was so impressed with the hospitable ladies of Berkeley, he ordered his troops to leave the plantation unscathed. Taps, a haunting, American military tune, was composed here while the Union Forces were encamped. Charles City is about 90 minutes from Richmond. Take I-64 east to Route 155 south to Route 5.
