This neighborhood was named after the famed dentist and leader of the Inconfidência Mineira, the emancipation movement that eventually led to Brazil's independence from Portugal. Located right downtown off Rua da Carioca, the neighborhood surrounding this plaza was the center of artistic life in the late 19th century, with several theatres and cafés. A must for ballroom dancers, with a few pictoresque and interesting venues.
