This is the largest favela (city within a city) in Rio de Janeiro. It lies in stark contrast to its wealthy neighbor, the São Conrado district. Guided tours into the heart of the shantytown are available in English and offered daily. Entirely safe, the tours take up to three hours and are led by young, well-trained local residents who offer insight into daily life in this part of the city.
