St. Kitts
St George's Anglican Church
First established church
Cayon St
Basseterre, St Kitts
St. George's has quite an impressive history of perseverance. It is the first English church to be established on St. Kitts. It is on the site of the former Catholic Church, Notre Dame, which burned to the ground by English soldiers during the power struggle between the French and English in 1706. In 1710, it was rebuilt as an Anglican church and named for St. George. It was again damaged by fire in 1763 and then a series of earthquakes and hurricanes between 1831 and 1843. In October of 1844, the foundation stone was poured and the church was rebuilt in March of 1859. Seven years later, it was totally destroyed in the fire that devastated the entire town of Basseterre. Not to be discouraged, builders began the process of trying to restore what was left of the church. It was completed in 1869 and has remained intact ever since. The massive square tower is a dominant landmark for Basseterre.
