The date for the Carnavales is different each year, though it's easy to figure out exactly when it will be because it starts forty days after Holy Week and lasts for six days, from Thursday to Tuesday. The "Fiesta del Carnaval" started in 1882 thanks to two gastronomic societies, and it has become a huge event over the last twenty years. The most representative day of the carnivals is Saturday, when in addition to the official bands, the rest of the population takes part, all out in the street in fancy dress. The carnival ends with the "burial of the sardine" (which sounds odd in English) and a somber parade of weeping people dressed in black and crying. It is indeed a curious spectacle.
