The San Sebastian Jazz Festival, established in 1965, is the second oldest event of its kind in Europe. Some of the world’s most talented and energetic musicians have played here, including Dave Holland and Medeski, Van Morrison, Gilberto Gil, Joe Cocker, and Roberta Flack. It is also a platform for newer artists to step forward and be heard. So if you’re in the city over the summer, make sure you book your tickets in advance as an average of 40,000 people flock to the stages around the city! Concerts take place both at the Kursaal Auditorium (modern and with a view of the sea) and the plaza de la Trinidad (Trinity Square) (small but more traditional and intimate), and at five other official locations around town. If you can't get tickets, you're not totally out of luck: you'll still find jam sessions and performances in various bars and throughout the streets of the city. The festival takes place in mid-late July and lasts for six days.
