The present San Sebastian city hall - built in 1882 - was originally a casino. Its design was inspired by European casinos and summer resorts. The location of the building also makes it exceptional, situated as it is next to La Concha Bay at the end of Alderdi-Eder gardens and at one of the extremes of the Boulevard, a promenading area and the way into the city's old quarter. Outside there is a large terrace which opens up onto the gardens. The interior is organized in a way appropriate to a building with such a function, with ballrooms, dining rooms and lecture halls. It has, of course, been renovated to a degree in order to fulfill its administrative functions, but many of its original decorative features have been preserved.
