Before the river was channeled, it was surrounded by sandy banks and served as an important means of communication with the interior, as well as having on its banks ports, steelworks and tide mills. After the city's expansion in 1863, the river banks began to see another kind of building activity in the form of magnificent residential buildings and walkways. Today, it is possible to walk along the Urumea on both sides, from the Kursaal Bridge to the Amara district, passing through the Paseo de Francia and Urumea promenade, areas full of trees and gardens, and also the Victoria Eugenia Theater and the Hotel María Cristina.
