WebsiteCherry blossom viewing, or hanami is almost an institution in Japan. However, do not be fooled into thinking of it as a genteel and aesthetic activity. It is an excuse for enthusiastic elbow bending, cacophonous crooning, and gorging. To participate, make your way to Matsumae Castle in Matsumae Park and mark your patch under the umbrella of beautiful cherry blossoms that cover the park. The chances are high that you will be invited to join a group of local revelers. Remember to take your camera—it's a great photo opportunity. Viewing usually takes place in early May, depending on the weather.
