Scottsdale Airport, located 9 miles north off downtown Scottsdale, is a busy airport handling approximately 10,000 passengers a year. The airport initially started in World War II as a training facility for fighter pilots and was known as the Thunderbird Field II. With the war ending the training base was used for commercial flying. In 1995, it was awarded the Arizona Airport of the Year for its efficient operations. The airport is a self-sufficient transport hub and also provides flight training, aircraft rentals and charter services.
