This spectacular Hindu fire-walking ceremony is held in honour of the goddess Draupadi, heroine of the epic poem Mahabharata and deified by the Hindus of South India as the Draupadi Amman. The ceremony takes place at the Sri Mariamman Temple, where barefoot Hindu devotees walk across a pit of red-hot embers with no apparent injury to their bare feet. As the event often draws a big crowd, visitors are advised to get to the temple early to obtain a good vantage point. Temple etiquette requires visitors to be dressed appropriately and for shoes to be removed at the entrance.
