Beginning with the haunting notes of a bugle playing 'The Last Post' at dawn services across Sydney, Anzac Day is a time when Australia stops and reflects on the service of Australia and New Zealand Army Corps troops. This public holiday (most shops are shut) is commemorated on the day itself, the main event being the parade beginning in George Street, in which returned servicemen and their relatives march in uniform before thousands of Sydneysiders who turn out rain, hail or shine to pay their respects.
