Ebara achieved fame when the Meiji emperor visited here just before taking up residence in Tokyo. The main shrine building is noteworthy because of its mixed architecture--a gongen-style roof and kasuga-style beams. The floral and animal motifs on the carvings demonstrate the considerable skill of mid-19th century craftsmen. A fascinating item in the adjacent museum is a large wooden meal-gong, shaped like a fish. It is reputed to have ensured that Shinagawa Bay was well stocked for the local fishermen.
