Divali or Deepavali, otherwise known as the "Festival of Lights" is an annual Hindu religious festival, which takes place usually in October or November. The sacred festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil-of light over darkness. It also honours Mother Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of light, beauty, riches and spiritual wealth. Although it is celebrated across the island, the actual day is preceded by ongoing events taking place at the Divali Nagar Site in the borough of Chaguanas. By 6pm, the night is transformed into a breathtaking spectrum of light as families light thousands of deyas (small clay vessels filled with oil).
