Viña del Mar
Plaza Vergara
Main Square of the City
Entre Arlegui y Avenida Valparaíso
Viña del Mar, V Región
The city's main square has a history dating back to the 19th century. It is often referred to as "Plaza Viña", after José Francisco Vergara, one of the founding fathers of this seaside resort. It is surrounded by early 20th century buildings, including the Municipal Theatre and the Hotels O'Higgins. Some of the city's main streets converge here. On one side of the square, a line of horse-drawn carriages, locally known as "Victorias", wait to whisk tourists along the seafront. Also in the neighbourhood are banks, the main Post Office, an exhibitions centre and a small shopping mall, as well as the Plaza Sucre. Two small freshwater ponds add a bit of variety to the landscape, and the old trees that border the sidewalk give the square a colourful hue in autumn.
