WebsiteGeorge Hudson, who was Mayor and also a Member of Parliament in the 1830s and 1840s, was mainly responsible for the development of the railway in York but it was Thomas Prosser who designed the current station and when it first opened on 25 June 1877, York Station was the centre of Britain's rail network and was, at that time, the largest station in the whole of Europe. It has a curved roof, which is 800 feet long and is supported by slender Corinthian columns.
