There are four Bars (or gateways) to the city of York, Bootham Bar, Micklegate Bar, Monk Bar and Walmgate Bar. Walmgate is the only surviving city gate in England to have preserved its barbican. Monk Bar has a portcullis still in good working order, and is also home to the Richard III museum. Bootham Bar is the defensive bastion for the north road and Micklegate Bar is the same for the south road. Micklegate Bar is also famous for its Royal Gateway through which the kings and queens of England have entered York victoriously, throughout the centuries.
