WebsiteAdjoining the Treasurers House and a stone's throw from the Minster, the National Trust's York Tea Rooms are rather more than the usual tea-and-scones affair sometimes found at Trust properties. An array of cakes and pastries, baked on the premises, jostle on a menu packed with freshly prepared meals and snacks, ranging from sandwiches to a full English breakfast. The National Trust has also recently expanded its bill of fare to include a variety of historical dishes commonly eaten in the Middle Ages, which the more adventurous might wish to sample. Spiced red onion and spinach upside down tart, anyone? The staff are friendly and the interior could be described as somewhere between modern and rustic. The old fireplace and some wooden beams have been retained but the furniture is green and cream and modern in design; the old and the new seem uneasy together. But the prices are fairly reasonable, and all proceeds go towards the Trust's conservation work in Yorkshire.
