Website | EmailThe Fluntern Cemetery is situated near the Zoo Zürich on Zürichbergstrasse. It has a peaceful, reverent atmosphere with many impressive sculptures and family crypts. There are also several graves that bring tourists flocking to this quiet section of town-- James Joyce, Nobel Prize winner Elias Canetti, and Heidi author Johanna Spiri, are all buried here. Though James Joyce was born and raised in Ireland, he spent much time in Switzerland, and came to this city shortly before his death. Now you can see a sculpture of the author in the famous "Thinker Pose" nearby his grave. Besides the historical value of this site, the serene surroundings and well-tended grounds make the cemetery an interesting place to visit. Hours vary depending on the time of year.
